About Budoshido
Budoshido began with a sketch; drawn at 19, long before there was any music to go with it. The name and the image fused two things that shouldn't have belonged together: New York hip hop and the discipline of zen and samurai mythos. Everything since has been an extension of that one idea.
The listening started in 1988. The beat-making started in 1990. By the mid-2000s, working out of Boston and Chicago, DJs were pulling tracks straight off the beat CDs - the hobby became something more.
Built on an Akai MPC and a vintage Akai S900 - the same instruments from the first sessions to the latest - the catalog spans jazz rap, boom bap, and cinematic instrumental work, moving across eras and styles from the mature, Dilla/Tribe-leaning sound of the Vintage Boom Bap series to house, R&B, and collaborative work with other independent artists under the Savoie Music collective.
Budoshido's music has always lived first in the room - old cassette mixtapes and CDs carried around town, played in listening rooms and coffee shops, sold and licensed locally - long before it ever reached a platform. Actual platform releases began in 2023 as a kind of digital archive; the old-school mixtapes and beats are still circulated locally.
